What do i do if my dog has fleas?

Updated: Feb 1, 2023

Fleas are a common pest when it comes to your pet. Dogs and cats are very susceptible to them! Whether at the dog park, bumping into a neighbor's dog, or at the boarding facility -- your pup can have one flea turn into hundreds. So its time to answer your question -- what do i do if my dog has fleas?

  • Give your pup a bath. Once you discover that your pup has fleas, a good place to start is by giving your pup a good soak. There are flea shampoos for dogs, but any good soapy lathering shampoo will help. Mutts Oatmeal and Aloe shampoo will help soothe your pups skin! Combing through your pups hair or fur while it is lathered up will help pull out the dead fleas. Be sure to check out the places fleas can hide, such as around the ears, feet and tail.

  • Wash your dogs bedding. If they sleep in your bed -- be sure to wash yours too to prevent bites and re-infestation.

  • Vacuum rugs and common areas that your pup uses.

How can I prevent fleas in the future?

  • Get a flea preventive product from your vet. Your vet can prescribe your pet a flea and tick prevention in a liquid or edible form that keeps your pup prevented from pesky fleas! There are also non-prescription options out there that you can get at your local pet store, Amazon or even Target.

  • Make a natural flea spray. Ingredients: 8 cups of white vinegar, 4 cups of water, 1 cup of lemon juice, ½ cup of witch hazel.

  • Use Diatomaceous Earth. This food grade product will dry out the fleas, killing them and keeping them far away. This should NOT be used on your pet. Follow the directions and sprinkle it outside in areas you think fleas could be thriving.

Fleas are everywhere! It's hard to avoid these pesky pests. But as you can see, there are many ways to help prevent and treat them should you pup pick some up.
